No sun, no sunscreen
UV filter: to be subdivided under mineral filter and chemical filter that will reflect or retain the UV radiation, so that our skin is protected against the damage of the UVA and UVB rays.
MYTH: "It's cloudy today, so I don't have to wear any sunscreen."
FACT: "UVA and UVB rays from the sun can't be blocked by clouds or windows. Therefore, protect yourself well all year round."
The sun radiates 3 types of ultra violet to the earth, 2 of which cannot be blocked by the ozone layer and will reach our skin. The rays are called UVA, UVB and UVC rays.
Luckily, UVC is blocked by our ozone layer, but the other two will easily get through the clouds and our windows. That is why we must protect ourselves against these rays every day, even when it rains and even in the winter. But if you're indoors all day with no or only a small window and/or limited view of the sky... In this case, panic if you forgot your sunscreen.
Imagine
UVA and UVB | layer 1. skin surface |
UVA and UVB | layer 2. epidermis with melanin |
UVA | layer 3. dermis with cells and collagen |
When arriving at layer 2, the UV rays can cause our skin to burn. The melanin present here will absorb these UV rays to protect the skin. This causes discolouration on the skin: redness, pigmentation (temporary exposure causes freckles and long-term exposure will result in age spots). Upon reaching layer 3, the UV rays will attack our cells and collagen. This causes our skin to age faster and it also increases the risk of skin cancer.
